Come explore the stories of the AmeriCorps VISTA members at the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension VISTA project. VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) members are working to educate, improve, and revitalize Arizona's communities through the research and resources provided by Arizona Cooperative Extension and 4-H Youth Development.
This project offers unique opportunities for those VISTA members who want to make a significant difference in the lives of rural, isolated, tribal families and youth whose parents are in the military. By creating sustainable environments, developing out-of-school programs and summer camps, training Master Gardeners who can teach others how to grow their own food, and helping organizations find resources and create marketing materials, VISTA members are meeting the critical needs of Arizona families and communities. Programs developed by AmeriCorps VISTA members aim to develop a sense of hope for the future through improved living conditions, a cleaner environment and economic self-sufficiency.
For example, AmeriCorps VISTA member Laura Gottschalk has been working with Extension Agent Chris Jones and the Gila County Master Gardener Association to start a farmers' market for the Globe-Miami area. As a catalyst in the community, they have inspired local vendors to come together and create the Globe-Miami Market Board. With Paul Buck as market manager, the market is now a city-sponsored event through the City of Globe, and has received financial support from the Historic Globe Main Street Program, and from the Hohokam Resource Conservation and Development Council. Opening day is June 25. The market will be open at Veteran's Memorial Park in front of Globe City Hall, 150 N. Pine Street, every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. through October 1.
