Educational Sites for Kids and Teachers

  • Describing Soils - Activity sheet by Hawai'i Space Grant College of the University of Hawai'i.

  • Digging Deeper- The National Gardening Association maintains Kids Gardening, with many resources for kids and teachers. It includes background and a variety of activities to cover many concepts in gardening, including soil topics. Many good ideas for teaching elementary school children.

  • Dirtland of the Microbe Zoo - one section of the Digital Learning Center for Microbial Ecology, it provides good basic information and links to more complete explanations and illustrations. Continued explorations from Dirtland lead to Ag Acres, Compost Pile, Home Sweet Home House of Horrors, Root Cellar, and Toxic Waste.

  • Erosion Lab - Lesson plans for experiments illustrating erosion to elementary school students.

  • Exploring Ancient Water Ways - Student activities that demonstrate soil concepts, including erosion, infiltration, slope and temperature, by the Bureau of Land Management.

  • Just for Kids: Soil Biological Communities - Soil concepts clearly and attractively presented for younger students, by the Bureau of Land Management's National Science and Technology Center.

  • Soil Science Education - Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) provides interesting, thorough background on soils for junior high and high school students.

  • Soils and their Conservation - Professor Sally Smith in the Department of Soil Science, Faculty of Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences at the University of Adelaide has developed an entertaining and informative site that even includes a "soil zoo" with images of insects, worms, microbes, fungi, and bacteria. These are presented in categories such as "Predators," "Tunnellers," "Grazers," "Microbes," and "Mutualisms" to emphasis the role each organism plays in the soil.

  • Utah Soils - Links for teachers planning a unit on soils. On Utah Education Network, the web site for the Utah State Office of Education, which provides a search feature for curriculum, links, lessons, and videos.
