Arizona Master Watershed Steward Program in Maricopa County

Û       Come learn about Arizona’s watersheds and water as well as how to 
protect or improve them.

Û       Meet people with similar interests. Meet professionals who manage 
your water and watersheds.

The University of Arizona Cooperative Extension is taking applications for 
the new statewide ARIZONA MASTER WATERSHED STEWARD PROGRAM.  The Arizona 
Master Watershed Steward Program is a partnership of the University of 
Arizona and the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality.  The program 
will offer residents of communities throughout Arizona an opportunity to 
become highly valued volunteers who are knowledgeable about watershed and 
water resources of the state.  A better informed public and greater 
participation in decision making processes are key goals of this program.

This intensive, 50-hour, adult-oriented course will teach participants 
about the basics of watersheds and water resources in Arizona. Participants 
will learn the basics of hydrology, climate, water conservation, geology, 
soils, ecology, water quality, water management among other topics. At 
least two all-day field trips will be scheduled.  Classes will be taught by 
UA faculty as well as other professionals from around the state.  A formal 
schedule will be available by early January.

Participants successfully completing the program and who wish become 
certified Master Watershed Stewards will be expected to donate 40 hours of 
volunteer service.  There are a wide variety of service opportunities 
available including cleanups, environmental monitoring, restoration 
projects, and public education.

The class meets Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Maricopa 
County Cooperative Extension office beginning January 20th through April 
21st.  A maximum of 20 people will be selected for this first class.

The cost is $125.00, which includes the publication notebook, training 
manual, and all handouts. Some scholarships may be available. Applications 
due by December 17th, 2004.
