"Science of Watering"
Explained July 23

How much water do popular landscaping species such as Lantana, Myoporum or
Moss Verbena require to keep them healthy and attractive in the Sonoran
Desert? How much water is just right...or too much? Once-a-month lectures at
Boyce Thompson Arboretum continue July 23 with a presentation by Arboretum
staff horticulturist Steve Carter -- he'll explain the eighteen-year research
project of ground cover plant irrigation needs.
Horticulturists at Boyce Thompson Arboretum began a detailed
study of the specific hydration needs of a wide array of landscaping ground
cover species back in 1988, planting small test plots, watering at levels
ranging from generous to parsimonious, and measuring the results. July 23 at
1 p.m. Mr. Carter presents a colorful slideshow report on this research along
with data about the long-term project. Adult daily admission to the Arboretum
is $7.50; that allows a full day at this beautiful 320-acre park and also
allows you to attend the guided butterfly walk July 23 at 10:30 a.m. Be aware,
though, there's an additional fee of $5 to attend the lectures on the fourth
Saturday of each month (or $3 to Friends-of-the-Arboretum annual members). And
the lecture room only accomodates 30 people, so pre-registration is suggested.
To pre-pay for this lecture call 520.689.2723 or else email
fernando at ag.arizona.edu. The lecture series continues August 27 with a
presentation by Desert Legume Program Director Matt Johnson; September 24 BTA
Education Coordinator Chris Kline will explain why he began sticking dime-
sized tags on monarch butterfly wings and releasing the insects to study their
migration; then October 22 hiker Dave Hicks will relate his experiences
traversing The Arizona Trail. For more detail about Arboretum events call the
recorded message line 520.689.2811 or visit the website
