<P><FONT COLOR="#0000FF" SIZE=2 FACE="Comic Sans MS">Prof Jeremy Selman the current head of IFIS has written the following about Ernest and the contribution he made to the food science information world. Given Ernest’s close links with IAALD I thought many of you would be interested in this.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT COLOR="#0000FF" SIZE=2 FACE="Comic Sans MS">‘</FONT> <FONT COLOR="#0000FF" SIZE=2 FACE="Arial">I</FONT><SPAN LANG="en-gb"> <FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Arial">write to inform you all of the sad news that Ernest Mann died peacefully on 30th July, at his home in Wargrave, aged 80 years.</FONT></SPAN><SPAN LANG="en-gb"> </SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN LANG="en-gb"><FONT FACE="Arial"> </FONT></SPAN>
<BR><SPAN LANG="en-gb"><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Arial">In many respects Ernest Mann can be regarded as the 'Father' of IFIS.</FONT></SPAN><SPAN LANG="en-gb"></SPAN>
<BR><SPAN LANG="en-gb"><FONT FACE="Arial"> </FONT></SPAN>
<BR><SPAN LANG="en-gb"><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Arial">In the 1960s, Ernest worked at CAB as the Director of the Commonwealth Agricultural Bureau for Dairy Science and Technology. He was aware that a British Journal called Food Science Abstracts had ceased publication in 1957, and in 1961 he observed in various countries, the gradual conversion of University Dairy Science Departments into Food Science and Technology Departments.</FONT></SPAN><SPAN LANG="en-gb"> </SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN LANG="en-gb"><FONT FACE="Arial"> </FONT></SPAN>
<BR><SPAN LANG="en-gb"><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Arial">Encouraged by recommendations from the 1960 CAB review that the various CAB Bureaux might consider extending their agricultural abstract coverage to include the products of animal and plant origin, he raised the issue of CAB's ability to do such a job at the First International Congress of Food Science and Technology in 1962. This established that there was interest in the development of an abstract journal on the bibliography of Food Science, and in 1964 it was agreed in principle that CAB should produce this. This was endorsed at the 1965 CAB Review Conference, and the first preliminary activity was to produce a Survey of the World Food Literature in co-operation with Dr Schutzsack of the German Institute of Documentation Science. The results showed that there were 717 journals which contained about 70% of the literature.</FONT></SPAN><SPAN LANG="en-gb"></SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN LANG="en-gb"><FONT FACE="Arial"> </FONT></SPAN>
<BR><SPAN LANG="en-gb"><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Arial">In January 1967 the US Institute of Food Technologists offered CAB their full co-operation in helping to establish the service, and IFIS was finally established at Shinfield in February 1968 when an agreement was signed by the above three partners from the UK, Germany and the USA at the Inaugural Management Committee meeting. The fist</FONT></SPAN><I></I><I></I><I><SPAN LANG="en-gb"> <FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Arial">FSTA</FONT></SPAN></I><SPAN LANG="en-gb"><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Arial"> appeared in 1969. Ernest served as Joint Managing Director of IFIS (together with Dr Schutzsack in Germany) from 1968 to 1986.</FONT></SPAN><SPAN LANG="en-gb"> </SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN LANG="en-gb"><FONT FACE="Arial"> </FONT></SPAN>
<BR><SPAN LANG="en-gb"><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Arial">In establishing IFIS internationally, Ernest travelled extensively, and was involved with many information initiatives worldwide. He was, for example, President of the International Association of Agricultural Librarians and Documentalists from 1980-90, and was twice President of the Commission of Studies for the International Dairy Federation from 1982-90. 1982 was Information Technology Year in the UK, and at that time he was possibly the first person to highlight the potential for CD ROMS in the information, rather than music, context. He continued to be active in the field of Dairy Science information even after retirement.</FONT></SPAN><SPAN LANG="en-gb"></SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN LANG="en-gb"><FONT FACE="Arial"> </FONT></SPAN>
<BR><SPAN LANG="en-gb"><FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Arial">A great family man, he had four children and at least eleven grandchildren.</FONT></SPAN><SPAN LANG="en-gb"></SPAN>
