Introduction
The purpose of the Forage and Grain Report is to keep you up-to-date
on the research activities conducted by the University of Arizona's
College of Agriculture and Life Sciences in this area. Our mission is
to support the needs of Arizona agriculture and improve the quality
of life for the citizens of the state.
Forage and grain crops are very important to the agriculture of the
state of Arizona. Since 1882, forage and grain crops have been grown
on more acres than any other commodity group 102 of the 121 years of
record. In 2002, forage and grain crops were harvested from 485,000
acres, an increase of 178,000 acres compared to 1991. Alfalfa, corn,
wheat, and barley contributed most to the acreage increase during this
time period. All indications are that forage and grain crops will continue
to be a vital part of Arizona agriculture in the future.
One of the goals of the University of Arizona's College of Agriculture
and Life Sciences is to strengthen Arizona's competitive position in
the production of agricultural commodities. The reports in this volume
contain information that can assist you and your industry in today's
market.
