Description of Conditions: Found on stressed mimosa and willow trees; white froth, acidic & nearly colorless; often has pleasant fermentative odor.
Control Strategy: Good cultural practices; proper watering in growing season and winter.

Item Name: Comandra Blister Rust on Pinus Elderica
Date: 4/1/02
City/Area: Prescott, AZ
Description of Conditions: Found on Elderica pine growing one-half mile away from known alternate host habitat (Quercus sp.).
Control Strategy: Prune infected wood out of tree. Once infected, Elderica pine will usually be overcome by disease within 5-7 years. Comandra blister rust normally infects young Ponderosa pine trees causing little significant damage. Comandra blister rust infects Elderica pine throughout the Prescott, Sedona, and Payson areas. The alternate host, Comandra pallida (Bastard Toadflax), is hemiparasitic on native Quercus species. The spores that infect pine trees originate from infected toadflax plants. Bottom line: Elderica pine should not be planted in these areas.

Control Strategy: Protect young plant from beet leafhoppers using fabric or remay following a wet spring. Remove infected plants.
dwarf mistletoe

Item Name: Dwarf Mistletoe on Ponderosa Pine
Date: 4/16/02
City/Area: Prescott, AZ
Description of Conditions: A parasite whose seeds are explosively released and then travel up to 40 ft.  In northern AZ, affects Ponderosa pine, Pinyon pine, Douglas fir, true fir.  Infections cause branch swelling, reduced growth, dieback, abnormal proliferation of small branches (witches brooms).
Control Strategy: Prune infected branches or remove infected trees or increase spacing between infected trees.

Date: 7/24/01
City/Area: Prescott, AZ
Description of Conditions: Growing on Hawthorn in landscape planting.
Control Strategy: None recommended. Fungicides are used where commercial apple orchards are affected. The alternate host is Juniperus sp. and removal is impractical.

Description of Conditions: Common circumstance: bacterium enter wound on plant, then there is a spring freeze followed by rain.  Normally will not kill plant.
Control Strategy:  Prune infected parts.

Description of Conditions: Growing on catclaw (Acacia) in native stands.

Description of Conditions: Attacks leaves and stems; requires surface moisture to establish; dry spores are spread by wind.
Control Strategy: Prune infected parts.

Item Name: Sycamore Anthracnose

Description of Conditions: Fungal disease favors cool spring weather; rarely causes permanent damage.
Control Strategy: No effective fungicide available.  Cannot control during current season; rake and dispose of fallen leaves & twigs during growing season and in the fall.  Avoid irrigation that wets the leaves.
