General Desc:
Stems usually several, erect or ascending, slender; herbage hairy; flower clusters of mostly 1 to 3 flowers, the flowers nodding, borne on long stems, petals dark red to purple.
Identification notes: Glandular-somewhat hairy herbage; basal leaves of 7 or more leaflets, possibly many more; leaflets triangular, tips 3-lobed or 3-toothed, blades stemmed; petals yellow, dark red to purple in flat topped clusters of 1 to 3 stemmed flowers; stamens 5.

Habitat Description: Rocky slopes, canyon bottoms, drainages, pinyon-juniper woodlands, ponderosa pine forests on gravelly volcanic or sandstone soil, often along seasonal stream courses.
