The Nile, Egypt’s lifeblood, traverses the Earth’s largest desert, the Sahara. Today, silt no longer nourishes the Nile Valley: since 1971, the Aswan High Dam has stemmed annual floods. Consequently, accumulating Saharan sands are beginning to cover fertile farmland.
