The editors wish to thank the contributors to this proceedings for providing their manuscripts in a timely manner and, when required, for responding quickly to our comments. In order to produce this proceedings in advance of the symposium itself, we were bound by tight deadlines. We have tried to apply, wherever possible, a minimum set of standards to all manuscripts, with regard to the quality of English and the technical merit of the research reported therein. While not all papers have received rigorous editing and the process falls short of peer review, we feel that the priority to publish the material on its own merit and to make the useful data and information widely available to the tilapia farming community has been met.

We thank the staff of the Shanghai Ocean University for their time in formatting the manuscripts and in coordinating and supporting the editorial process. The contributions of the invited speakers, the session chairs and poster session organizers are also greatly appreciated.
