SCHOOL POLICIES AND PROCEDURES OF SPECIAL CONCERN TO NEW TEACHERS

General School Policies

  1. Do I have a departmental budget? How much is set aside for laboratory tools each year?
  2. What is the school schedule? Length of class periods? Time of classes?
  3. What school attendance records am I expected to keep?
  4. Housekeeping-Who sweeps the floor?  What are my responsibilities?
  5. Use of school bus field trips-Who drives?  What previous arrangements need to be made?
  6. When leaving the school building, what procedure should be followed?
  7. What procedure should I follow when attending professional meetings and conventions away from school?
  8. What procedure should be followed in taking students on educational trips, conventions, what is expected of them concerning make-up work in other classes?
  9. What procedure should be followed in handling student management problems?
  10. What is the sick leave policy-who locates the substitute teacher?
  11. What procedure should be followed in requisition to tools, reference books and other supplies for the agriculture department?

FFA

  1. How do we raise our FFA money?  What activities are not tolerated?

      Example: raffles?

  1. FFA fund at present; has it been audited and approved before new year transactions?  What procedure should be followed in paying FFA bills?  Who writes checks?
  2. How should dues and lab fees be collected, by teachers or whom?
  3. Where should money be kept? What records are required?
  4. Should FFA meetings be approved and put on school calendar?
  5. What policy should be followed when someone is caught taking chapter funds?
  6. Is there a set policy for refreshments at night meetings?
  7. What policy should be followed with salesmen wanting you to sell their products?
  8. How far in advance must dates be approved for an FFA activity?

ENROLLMENT AND RECRUITMENT

  1. What procedure should be followed in advising with eighth graders?
  2. Who determines whether a student should take agricultural education or Spanish, etc.?
  3. Can students who enroll in agriculture also enroll in college preparatory courses?

FACULTY MEETINGS

  1. Where do I find schedules of all faculty meetings?
  2. Are there social clicks or certain individuals in the community I should be aware of?
  3. What is expected of me concerning:
    1. dating high school students
    2. paying bills it the community
    3. shopping in the community
    4. loafing in the bars-smoking/chewing in public
    5. spouse talking about school events
    6. professional relations with other teachers

PUBLIC RELATIONS

  1. Where do I take new articles?  What precautions, if any, should be observed in this area.
  2. Should FFA articles, radio programs, etc have administrative approval?

CLASSROOM

  1. Adult program-what do I need to know concerning past history in reference to number of meetings, time of evening meetings, overall success of adult programs, cooperation with community colleges, etc.?
  2. Do adults use the classroom for class purposes?
  3. Can adults use the gym for recreation?

LABORATORY

  1. Does the maintenance department use the tools?
  2. What procedure should be followed in loaning tools to teachers, students, patrons, etc?
  3. How do we finance breakage and loss of tools?
  4. Do we have a budget for tools and laboratory maintenance?
  5. How do we finance student projects? Should we purchase materials through the school office or FFA?  How should money be collected? By whom?
  6. Where do we get materials and how has been the best method of financing?
  7. What is my liability in the laboratory? Insurance policy needed, etc?
  8. In case of joint use of facilities, what procedures are followed in caring for equipment, cleaning up, etc.

EXTENDED SERVICE

  1. What summertime reports to local school administrators are desirable?
  2. What summertime activities (FFA, adult, etc.) are desirable in the community?
  3.  What is the feeling toward the agriculture teacher attending summer conference? Who needs to give approval?

PROFESSIONAL IMPROVEMENT

  1. What is school policy concerning summer school?
  2. What is school policy concerning non-credit, one-day workshop?
  3. What obligation do I have concerning my profession? Attitude? Ideals? Organizations AVA, NEA, NAAE AVATA, AZVA.
  4. Should I enroll in an off-campus course in my area?
  5. Do I belong to professional organizations?
