LESSON: EFFECTIVE USE OF SUPERVISED STUDY

COMPETENCY:

To use supervised study techniques.

OBJECTIVES:

1. To identify the need for and techniques in using supervised study.
 2. To describe techniques for organizing, utilizing and evaluating
notebooks.

QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION:

1. What is meant by (directed) supervised study?
        a. Study under the guidance and direction of the teacher
2. When should supervised study be used? 
   
     a. Need for factual information.
   
     b. Determine answers to questions and problems. 
        c. Evaluating materials. 
   
     d. Developing SOE plans; evaluating results. 
        e. Reaching desired decisions. 
   
     f. Involving students in the thinking process.

3. What are the educational benefits of supervised study?
   
     a. Extends the limited time available to teachers and 
        b. Allows for practice individually, and gives time for 
   
         teacher interaction 
   
     c. Enriches learning by incorporating out-of-class ex 
        d. Allows students to work at their own pace, in 
   
         their preferred learning style.
   
     e. Provides students with practice in how to learn, 
            organize information and solve problems.

4. What are the purposes of supervised study in teaching agriculture? 
   
     a. To create and maintain conditions conducive to effective learning.
        b. To provide for systematic and organized study under the 
            guidance of a teacher.
   
     c. To teach students how to study, read, evaluate and decisions.
   
     d. To provide an adequate reference library.
   
     e. To provide individual (one-on-one) instruction.
   
     f. To develop desirable teacher-student relationships.

5. What is the rule of thumb for effective length of time for supervised study?
   
     a. One (I) minute per year of age. 

6.  What should the teacher do to make supervised study effective?
   
     a. Have a well-developed lesson plan
   
     b. Have necessary reference materials available prior to class. 
        c. Work with students.
   
     d. Do not do other tasks.
   
     e. Give adequate supervision 
        f.  Provide proper physical environment. 
        g. Move about room quietly.
   
     h. Help students learn how to study by skimming and 
            analyzing materials.
   
     i. Provide for individual differences
         j. Introduce new material, when appropriate.
         k. Encourage students to study.
         I. Assist students interpret data, words and phases.

APPROVED PRACTICES FOR EFFECTIVE USE OF SUPERVISED STUDY

1. The teacher must make provisions on the lesson plans for supervised study.
2. Use supervised study only when it is the best tool for the job.
3. Use relevant questions which require thinking or manipulating when possible and tell students where answers can be found.
4. Provide adequate reference materials and make sure they a available. Materials should be current and up-to-date a and ready before class begins.
5. The teacher should be well prepared and organized. Preparation for discussion of study questions should be prior to class.
6. The students should be prepared for study by a motivating introduction.
7. Use a variety of techniques to obtain information.
8. Circulate quietly through the classroom and provide assistance individually only when needed.
9. Keep the room comfortable and neat.
10. Use supervised study to develop good student-teacher relations and to encourage the thinking process.
11. Provide questions or additional study for those who finis but make it an honor or award.
12. Maintain class control and prevent distractions.
13. Provide adequate time to discuss answers to study questions in class and to draw conclusions.
14. Provide class time at the beginning of the year to explain and why we use supervised study.

CONDUCTING EFFECTIVE SUPERVISED STUDY

To conduct an effective supervised study session, the teacher should:
