THE SUMMARY

PURPOSE OF SUMMARY

Condense the lesson

Summarize key points at the time they are made

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS, REVIEW

One, or a combination of the following procedures may serve to culminate a lesson, an individual class period, or a unit of lessons effectively.

  1. Stress the use of facts or skills learned.
  2. Help students evaluate their progress toward their desired objectives.
  3. Close the class with a brief oral review of the highlights of the lesson.
  4. Introduce the subject for the next days
  5. Formulate generalizations from specifics studied that day.
  6. Summarize the main point.
  7. Have a student summarize the main points.
  8. Ask one student to give a verbal summary to be supplemented by others.
  9. Ask each student to write out a summary.
  10. Make summarization a group project to be worked out on the chalkboard.
  11. Show how what was learned today will connect up with or be important to future lessons.
  12. Use a brief review of past work as a summary or conclusion for the day’s work.
  13. Upon completion of a large unit, have summarization and organization period to show the relation of parts and applications.
  14. Emphasize key points
  15. Develop a list of approved practices.
  16. Leave the class with a final thought or question which they can mull over until the next class meeting.
  17. Ask questions which will serve both as a check on the understanding of what was covered and as a culminating activity.
  18. Ask the class:

·   What was the most important thing we learned today?

·   What were our stated objectives for this session? How well did we accomplish them?

·    What have we learned?

·    Was this a productive session? Why?

·    Did you like the approach we used today? Why?

·    What have we been trying to accomplish today?

·    Have we been building up to something during this class period? What?

·   Was what we did today worthwhile?

Summarize the objective

Stress significant concepts

Involve students and make the summary a group process

Draw conclusions from students

Write the conclusion and be sure students record in notes.
