Description

Drought- and cold-deciduous shrubs or small trees to 10 ft (3 m) high. The bark is smooth and reddish brown. Twigs are armed with small prickles. Leaves are bipinnate with 1 pair of pinnae. Each pinna has 5--12 pairs of small leaflets. White flower heads are produced in summer.

Habitat

Native to the Monte Desert of northwestern Argentina where it is found on slopes and canyons.

Horticulture

Tusca blanca is not cultivated for landscaping. The plants have the potential to become invasive, particularly where moisture is available, and are not recommended for this reason. The species is hardy to at least 16° F (-9° C).
