Angela Taylor, Ph.D. - FCS Special Recognition Award 2020

Dr. Angela Taylor joined the faculty of Family Studies and Human Development at the University of Arizona in 1991 as an associate professor, and retired this past May as Norton School Assistant Director for Academic Programs. Before coming to the University of Arizona, Dr. Taylor earned her Doctorate degree in Educational Psychology from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, in 1984, and taught at the University of Maryland and then California State University, Chico.

Growing up in Washington, D.C., Angela was one of the first cohorts to desegregate D.C. public schools. She explains, from that experience she became acutely aware of societal prejudices and negative stereotypes regarding academic abilities of ethnic minority children. Her early experiences shaped her scholarly work, which focused on childhood social development and early school adjustment of low-income and ethnic minority children.

Dr. Taylor has received numerous honors over her career including the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Distinguished Leadership Award from the African American Student Affairs at the University of Arizona. She was made an Honorary Alumnus by the UA Alumni Association in 2014, was CALS Administrator of the Year in 2012 for her outstanding administrative leadership as the FSHD Division Chair, and received the FCS Council Faculty Award not once, but twice!

Angela’s colleagues wrote in their letters of support that she “leaves a wonderful legacy of leadership, persistence, capability, and strength,” and that her entire career “has been focused on delivering high-quality academic programs to students, ensuring the School is functioning in optimal capacity, and collaborating meaningfully among colleagues.” Another wrote, “Angela clearly cares about the Norton School’s present and future success. She does everything she can to ensure that we all thrive in our work, so we can do our best at supporting students and furthering the Norton School’s goals.”

For her many years of service to the John and Doris Norton School, the Council of Alumni and Friends is pleased to honor Dr. Angela Taylor with this Special Recognition Award!
