Norton News - Message From the Director - V2

Welcome to the Norton School’s second electronic newsletter!

I was delighted to hear from many of you in response to our inaugural E-Norton News last fall.   Once again, you will be proud to discover the innovative work of our faculty and students that has an outstanding impact.  Not only does their work continue to enhance the lives of people but also to provide solutions to challenging issues we face in our society.

For instance, we face societal challenges such as diminishing water supplies, energy crisis, child obesity, and food security, and food safety.    We believe that social, consumer, and family scientists need to collaborate with environmental and biological scientists in providing practical solutions in building sustainability in our marketplace and communities.

At the Norton School, we have already taken measures to do just that.  The faculty in Retailing and Consumer Sciences has launched the Consumers, Environment, and Sustainability Initiative (CESI) in partnership with the UA’s Institute of Environment and Water Resource Research Center.  The goal of CESI is to better understand consumer rituals, motivation, attitudes and behavior associated with the consumption of goods, services and natural resources, and to provide consumers with validated tools to help them reflect on and improve the sustainability of their consumption patterns.

The CESI is co-directed by Drs. Anita Bhappu and Sabrina Helm, and will be joined by our new faculty member, Dr. Gretchen Nurse, who will join the Norton School this fall.  For more information, I invite you to visit the CESI website.

Please enjoy this spring issue of our newsletter and let us hear from you!
