Books and publications

The University of Arizona Herbarium provides numerous resources for plant identification and botanical research.

In addition to our collection of over 400,0000 plant specimens, the herbarium serves as a branch of the University of Arizona Library, and houses a large collection of books and journals on botany and horticultural. We also have significant holdings of botanical illustrations. Follow the links at left for information on these and other resources at ARIZ.

Images

Several image resources are available at the University of Arizona Herbarium.

Foremost of these are the Shantz Photographs, a collection of historical photographs from the American West and Africa, taken by the late Dr. Homer L. Shantz, botanist, professor, and president of the University of Arizona. Many of these locations were later re-photographed decades later by Dr. Shantz and collaborators.

Within the coming months, the herbarium will begin scanning herbarium specimens, beginning with our type collection. Although this project is a huge undertaking expected to last many years, we will make these images available as they are produced via our online specimen database.
