Africa repeat photo

Left figure: Just east of Laingsburg, Africa. Acacia karroo, with all leaves within reach of goats removed, showing bare ground with Asclepias fruticosus, a perennial herb, scattered in the fore and background. 20 June 1924 (A2-4-1924)

Right figure: Position nearly exact (somewhat back to allow for new tree growth). The annual Augea capensis has invaded much of the previously bare area and is almost the sole herbaceous dominant (a few closely grazed Galenia africana plants were found in the phot area as well as the annual weed, Argemone mexicana and Ruschi sp.). Ascelipas fruticosus could no longer be found in the immediate study area, though a few plants were seen along the highway nearby. The major change has been an increase in the succulent Augea capensis at the expense of bare ground and Asclepias fruticosus. The area shown in the photo must be extremely disturbed since the tree apparently serves as shade for nearby inhabitants. A crude swing now hangs from the lower branches and several rocks have been brought in to sit on or for building campfires. 9 September 1956 (B-1-1956)
