August 5, 2015 - the Gold King Mine spills 3 million gallons of waste into the Animas and San Juan rivers near Silverton, Colorado. The extent of the spill has affected numerous people, tribes and animals in a seemingly endless fashion.

Today -  Dr. Karletta Chief, a hydrologist, continues to work with the CALS Soil, Water and Environmental Science department, including Paloma Beamer and her doctoral student, Yoshira Ornelas Van Horne, to research the contaminated rivers and those who were affected by the spill in the Navajo nation. Learn more about their research and findings below in their short film, "Bitter Water."
