Rebecca Lloyd

MS/PhD student in School of Natural Resources (started FA 2007)

Rebecca's research interests evolved from working over 10 years as a hydrologist in a very progressive, large-scale watershed restoration program.  In general, Rebecca is interested how watershed restoration projects should be designed in order to have a meaningful and sustainable impact on the ecosystem in which they were built.  This requires developing an understanding of the following:

1.  Linkages between restoration and ecosystem function
2.  How to measure ecosystem function: hydrology, soils, disturbance, and vegetation.
3.  Spatial and Temporal scales of restoration required to impact ecosystem function.
4.  Resilience of restoration to different stressors specifically invasive species encroachment and climate change.

Additionally, I am interested in the social aspects of restoration.  What society needs drive the growing emphasis on restoration in lands in the west?  How are these needs built into restoration projects?  How does society value restoration or more specifically how do we value the ecosystem services provided by a functioning ecosystem?

Bryan Moravec

PhD student in School of Natural Resources (start Fall 2008)

Bryan joined the Lohse Lab in the Fall 2008 after completing his MS at Washington State University.

Bryan’s research interests revolve around the biogeochemical cycles observed in managed and unmanaged systems, and how they relate to water quality in both surface and groundwaters.  Specifically, Bryan is interested in:

  1. The use of stable isotopes coupled with geochemistry as tools to identify biogeochemical processes.
  2. Identifying the causes of seasonal variability of nutrient fluxes within watersheds.
  3. The interaction and resulting chemistries of water as a result of abiotic and biological processes at different stages within the critical zone.
  4. The potential biogeochemical changes within watersheds that will result from climate change in the desert southwest.

Additionally, Bryan is interested in the biogeochemistry of managed agricultural systems, as well as the science and policy aimed at reducing our dependency on fertilizers and pesticides in food production.
