Plant Description

Origin: Native  Similar Species: Var. coahuilensis Martinez
General Description: Evergreen. Small shrubby tree with bright red berries and open, irregular crown of spreading branches. Trunk diameter to 8 inches. Lower branches originate near the ground level. Habitats include desert grasslands, dry foothills and mountains.

Habitat

Plant Communities: Interior Chaparral, Semidesert Grasslands, Pinyon Juniper Woodland
Elevation: 4000 - 6500 feet


Flowers

Color: Pale yellow or pale green   Shape: Inconspicuous in round clusters     Tubular: N   Flowering Period: Sep - Oct
Description: Dioecious. Males are small pale yellow in large clusters at ends of twigs. Females are small, round pale green.

Leaf Color: Gray-green   Type: Scales   Shape: Other   Margin: Other   Attachment: Other   Hairs: N
Description: Scale-like. In 4 rows forming 4 angled twigs. 1/16 inch long.


Fruit

Color: Bright red   Type: Cone or cone-like   Description: Round and 5/16 inch in diameter. Hardens at maturity. One seed per fruit which matures in one growing season and disperses in the fall.


Bark/Branches

Bark Color: Reddish-brown or gray   Bark Texture (Mature): Shreddy or peeling   Bark and Branch Description: Furrowed and scaly. Twigs are stout and somewhat angular with reddish brown color.
