Forb Plant Description

Origin: Native   Life Cycle: Perennial
General Desc: Long, thin, narrow or lance-shaped (spear-like) basal leaves, often toothed or lobed; flower heads single, ray petals only, typically orange, each with a few tiny teeth at the tips. Unbranched stems are leafless. Orange flowers are common in the wild.
Identification notes: Leaves erect; leaf stem usually purple; blades long and narrow, widest in the middle, pointed at the tip, can be pointed at the base, smooth or toothed to irregularly lobed; flowers orange (sometimes yellow, pink, red, or purple), drying to purple.
Height: 8 to 20 inches


Habitat

Habitat Description: Meadows, scrub, forest, stream sides.
Plant Communities: Montane Conifer Forest, Riparian
Elevation: 7000 - 11500 feet


Flower Characteristics

Color: Orange, sometimes yellow, pink, red, purple, or white     Shape: Daisy or dandelion-like not in clusters     Tubular: N     Flowering Period: Jun - Aug
Description: Ray flowers only, shorter toward the center; stamens upright; flower heads to 1 inch wide; solitary on erect, leafless stems. Bracts in 2 to 3 series, green, middles may be rosy purple, often with purplish-black blotches and/or mid-stripes.

Fruit Notes: Barrel-shaped to inverted cone shape, tip tapered; ribs straight, hairless to minutely rough hairs.
