Forb Plant Description

Origin: Native   Life Cycle: Biennial or annual
General Desc: A small plant with naked stems arising from a basal rosette of simple, toothed leaves; small star-like flowers at end of erect stems.
Identification notes: Plants annual or biennial, not mat-forming, found in moist to dry areas; leaves in rosettes, blade bases obscurely narrow to a stem; flower bracts relatively narrow, petals longer than the sepals.
Height: To 12 Inches


Habitat

Habitat Description: Found on gravelly stream beds, in moist ground of springs or meadows, mountain parks, or open coniferous forests.
Plant Communities: Montane Conifer Forest, Riparian
Elevation: 6000 - 12000 feet


Flower Characteristics

Color: White     Shape: Regular in round clusters     Tubular: Y     Flowering Period: Apr - Sep
Description: White funnel-shaped, star-like, with 5 roundish lobes; to 1/4 inch wide; on leafless erect stems.

Leaf Color: Dark green to reddish-green     Leaf Type: Simple     Leaf Shape: Round or oval     Leaf Margin: Toothed     Leaf Attachment: Basal     Leaves Clasp: N
Hairs: Leaves     Spines: N
Leaf Description: Basal rosette with blades 1/4 to 3/4 inch long, without a stalk of any kind, lance-like, without hairs to hairy with soft hairs, narrow oval shape tapering to a point at each end.


Fruit and Seed Characteristics

Fruit Color: Green, dark browm   
Fruit Type: Capsule
Fruit Notes: Valvate capsule (meeting at the edges without overlapping).
Seed Notes: About 1/16 inch long.
