Forb Plant Description

Origin: Introduced   Life Cycle: Perennial
General Desc: Erect or ascending stems with upper leaves much reduced and flowers in umbels. Leaf shape and scent are similar to celery. Can be relatively tall plant. Stalks are yellow to yellow-brown by late summer with attached celery like seeds.
Identification notes: Only 1 species of Apium in Yavapai County. This plant has no involucre or sepals; pinnate or more than once compound leaves; fruit ribs have very small wings; inflorescence branches from a single point (umbel).
Height: 1-1/2 to 4 feet


Habitat Description: Moist places in low elevations.

Elevation: Below 3300 feet

Flower Characteristics

Description: Many small flowers with 5 free and wide petals; minute calyx lobes.

Leaf and Stem Characteristics

Leaf Color: Green     Leaf Type: Simple     Leaf Shape: Pinnatifid     Leaf Margin: Lobed     Leaf Attachment: Opposite     Leaves Clasp: N
Hairs: No     Spines: N
Leaf Description: Stalk portion of leaf is 1/8 to 1 inch and the blade is 2-3/4 to 7 inches with leaflets that are 3/4 to 1-3/4 inches long.

Fruit and Seed Characteristics

Fruit Color:    
Fruit Notes: Two dry, 1-seeded halves separate from each other but generally remain attached for some time to a central axis and are 1/16 to 1/2 inch in diameter. Ovary may have a conical or flat top.
Seed Notes: Flat faced.
