Forb Plant Description

Origin: Native   Life Cycle: Perennial   Similar Species: Ipomoea spp.
General Desc: Perennial herb; leaves and stems without hairs, stems erect to trailing on the ground; roots somewhat spherical or elongate, tuberous.
Identification notes: Plant tends to not be neatly arranged; stems twining; leaves in scattered clumps, blades wedge-shaped to egg-shaped, 3 to 5 or more divisions; flowers purple, broadly funnel-like, 1-1/2 inches long, stamens do not protrude.
Height: Trailing to 20 inches


Habitat

Habitat Description: Open rocky slopes. A Mexican (Coahuila, Chihuahua, Sonora) species reaching its northern limits in Arizona and New Mexico, vine occuring in sedimentary outcrops, pinyon-juniper zone, on pale rather barren bedrock outcrops.

Elevation: 4500 - 8500 feet


Flower Characteristics

Color: Purple     Shape: Regular not in clusters     Tubular: Y     Flowering Period: Aug - Sep
Description: Sepals unequal; outer sepals 1/4 to 1/2 inch long, 1/16 to 1/8 inch wide, oblong to pointed, hairy at least along the midrib; inner sepals about 1/2 inch long, 1/8 to 1/4 inch wide, broadly oval, tapering to a point, hairy to smooth on the midrib.

Fruit Color: Brown   
Fruit Type: Capsule
Fruit Notes: Spherical, 1/4 inch wide, with short flexible point to 1/4 inch long.
Seed Notes: Oval, black to dark brown, finely hairy, 1/6 inch long.
