General Desc:
Stemless plant; both leaf stalks and flower stalks are attached directly to the rootstock; flowers have 5 petals, 2 upper, 2 at the side and 1 below.
Identification notes: Leaves simple, not divided, arising from base of plant, stalked, with serrated margins; flowers solitary in leaf axils; 5 petaled, bluish-purple to purple, on 1 to 6 inch long stalks, 5 sepals oval to lance-like, sepals to 1/2 inch long.

Habitat Description: Found in moist soils along streams, seeps, springs, and also in shaded sites.
