ICTV Approved Plant Virus Families and Genera

This list is a rearranged list of a large database containing descriptions of all viruses originally developed at the Australian National University's Bioinformatics Facility and now maintained at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). The rearangement divided plant viruses into serveral categories according to the type of viral genomic nucleic acids. This taxonomic outline is used for students taking PLP 611: Molecular Plant Virology at University of Arizona.

The original list of the taxonomic structure of virus families and genera has been compiled from:
The Classification and Nomenclature of Viruses. "Sixth Report of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses" (1995)
Eds. F.A. Murphy, C.M. Fauquet, M.A. Mayo, A.W. Jarvis, S.A. Ghabrial,

Throughout this document, each type species name is preceded by the name of the order, family and genus it belongs to. Names of orders, families and genera are in italic script, if they are approved by the ICTV. Taxa names in quotes (and not in italic s cript) indicate that this taxon has not an ICTV international approved name. Species (vernacular) names are given in regular script. Viruses with no formal assignment to genus or family are indicated.
