Forb Plant Description

Origin: Native   Life Cycle: Perennial
General Desc: Weakly twining vine sometimes scrambling up and over shrubs reaching several feet in length. Occasionally growing up to about 1-1/2 feet tall. Can be a stand-alone plant.
Identification notes: Herbaceous, stems trailing or climbing, many spreading and erect twining branches; small linear to lance-shaped leaves sometimes have lobes at the leaf bases; solitary flower on a long stalk. Pale pink or creamy white flowers.
Height: To 18 inches


Habitat

Habitat Description: Found on dry soils, on slopes among oaks and and in chaparral.
Plant Communities: Interior Chaparral, Semidesert Grasslands, Pinyon Juniper Woodland
Elevation: 3500 - 5000 feet


Flower Characteristics

Color: Pale pink or white to cream     Shape: Regular not in clusters     Tubular: Y     Flowering Period: Mar - Oct
Description: Solitary flowers on a long flower stalk up to 8 inches in length; flower bloom is 4 to 5 inches wide often with lavender veins; sepals narrow; stamens glandular, hairy on the lower third, flowers borne in 1 to few-flowered clusters.

Leaf Description: Alternate, narrow triangular shape like that of a spearhead, 3/4 to 3 inches long, 1/16 to 1/4 inch wide; spreading basal lobes 3/4 to 3 inches long; blades borne on slender stalks 1/16 to 1//8 inch long.


Fruit and Seed Characteristics

Fruit Color: Tan, dark brown   
Fruit Type: Capsule
Fruit Notes: 4-celled, surrounded by enlarged sepals and sometimes by bracts; oval; tan.
Seed Notes: 1 to 4, without hairs, dark brown, smooth or netted, 1/8 inch long.
