Areas of Expertise

Lela Rankin Williams is an associate professor in the School of Social Work, Tucson, at Arizona State University (ASU). Her interdisciplinary training in psychology and human development and family studies has informed an ecological perspective, including the importance of regarding cultural and familial relationships as influences on substance use and romantic relationships, particularly teen dating violence among Mexican American youth. Her primary research goal is to develop a culturally sensitive school-based prevention program to serve these youth better. An active leader in both academic and community settings, she places a high priority on conducting rigorous and culturally-relevant research in collaboration with community partners that is both meaningful and accessible.
