FSSRT Positions

The purpose behind FSSRT cabinet members’ positions is to promote increased exchange of information and to facilitate communication and discussion of graduate student needs within the student body. In addition, all cabinet members represent graduate students at the departmental, school, college, and university level. To that end, members who hold the following positions pledge to fulfill the responsibilities that inhere in these roles.

Active Member (non-elected position).

Eligibility: Matriculate in the FSHD graduate program.
Responsibilities: Pays dues each semester of enrollment each academic year ($5 at the beginning of each semester) and attends all meetings either in person or by proxy.

President

Eligibility: Active member of FSSRT.
Qualifications: It is recommended that this person is a seasoned member of the FSHD graduate community and is broadly aware of the spectrum of student experiences, concerns, and views.
Responsibilities: The official representative of the organization and liaison to the University community and the community at large; writes official communications from FSSRT; coordinates all official activities; calls regular and special meetings; presides at meetings; prepares agenda for meetings; and coordinates activities of officers to ensure efficient functioning of FSSRT and continued pursuit of FSSRT’s objectives. Delegates these responsibilities to the Vice President when unable to perform them.

Vice President

Eligibility: Active member of FSSRT.
Qualifications: It is recommended that this person is a seasoned member of the FSHD graduate community.
Responsibilities: Assumes duties of President when necessary; assists President in coordinating official activities; assists President in planning and implementation of FSSRT goals; and can assume any cabinet post during a meeting if circumstances require. Collects and updates abstracts from conference presentations and manuscripts for the hallway bulletin boards. Works with IT specialist to maintain and update the FSSRT website on a regular basis (e.g., collecting updated student bios, posting current officers and future meetings, gathering possible funding opportunities, and removing past-due funding opportunities.)

Faculty Representative

Eligibility: Active member of FSSRT.
Qualifications: Confidence in speaking candidly to the faculty as a whole on behalf of the graduate student body; actively involved in and generally aware of the spectrum of graduate student concerns, issues, and views as well as the historical context of issues.
Responsibilities: Attends faculty meetings as scheduled; responsible to act as a communicative liaison between faculty and FSSRT; and reports relevant FSSRT issues to faculty and vice versa (i.e,. provides thorough reports at FSSRT meetings). Seeks another cabinet member to temporarily perform these responsibilities when unable to do so.

Graduate Studies

Eligibility: Active member of FSSRT.
Qualifications: Must be at or very near ABD status (i.e., all but dissertation) and able to maturely handle exposure to highly confidential credentials and applicant information. Confidence in speaking candidly to the graduate and admission committees on behalf of the graduate student body; actively involved in and informed about the spectrum of graduate student concerns, issues, and views as well as the historical context of issues; and ability to contribute objectively to the discussion of issues that are specifically relevant to the graduate program (e.g., curriculum, program planning) and to the evaluation of admission applicants.
Responsibilities: Attends graduate and admission committee meetings as scheduled (typically on a bi-monthly basis); responsible to act as a communicative liaison between the graduate studies and admission committees and FSSRT; reports relevant FSSRT issues to the graduate studies committee and vice versa (i.e., provides thorough reports at FSSRT meetings, including admission reports of number of applicants, offers, acceptances); and forwards pressing issues to the FSSRT Faculty Representative for further discussion and decision-making at faculty meetings. Seeks another cabinet member to temporarily perform these responsibilities when unable to do so.

 

Admission Representative

Eligibility: Active member of FSSRT.

Social Liaison and Recruitment Coordinator

Eligibility: Active member of FSSRT.
Qualifications: Fun-loving, socially connected, and creative; able to execute all recruitment/hospitality responsibilities throughout the Spring semester.
Responsibilities: Implements social activities that benefit FSSRT by building a sense of community among members of the graduate student and faculty community; coordinates housing and other hospitality activities for prospective students (e.g., coordinates luncheons between prospective students and current students whose academic interests match, coordinates evening diversionary events for prospective students); responsible together with Treasurer to implement fundraising activities as determined by FSSRT; assists other cabinet members in coordinating activities when necessary; assists President in planning FSSRT involvement on the department or University level; assists President in coordinating the assignment of representatives when FSSRT requires representation at departmental or University-wide activities. Seeks another cabinet member to temporarily perform these responsibilities when unable to do so.

Records Officer/Secretary

Eligibility: Active member of FSSRT.
Qualifications: It is recommended that this person is attentive to detail, actively involved in and generally aware of the functions of FSSRT, and familiar with the historical context of issues.
Responsibilities: Keeps accurate minutes of each meeting and forwards copies of them to all members of the FSHD graduate community to ensure that all graduate students (i.e., active and inactive graduate students alike) are aware of the contents of FSSRT meeting discussions; keeps attendance records of meetings which includes proxies; maintains accurate current information about FSSRT and its membership and previous FSSRT information and documents; assists President and Vice President in coordinating activities when necessary; prepares meeting agenda when necessary; assists individuals making a presentation at a FSSRT meeting by securing necessary equipment or materials. Seeks another cabinet member to temporarily perform these responsibilities when unable to do so.

Treasurer

Eligibility: Active member of FSSRT.
Qualifications: It is recommended that this person is particularly attentive to detail.
Responsibilities: Maintains accurate and current accounts of all FSSRT funds; provides financial updates at FSSRT meetings; formally hands account over to the next Treasure by making a special trip with that person to the bank to change the account-holder name; collects active member dues; dispenses funds in accordance with goals and activities conducted by FSSRT; responsible to coordinate and disperse gifts of condolence and appreciation for members of the FSHD graduate student, faculty, and staff community; responsible together with Social Liaison to implement fundraising activities as determined by FSSRT; and assists other cabinet members in coordinating activities when necessary. Seeks another cabinet member to temporarily perform these responsibilities when unable to do so.

Undergraduate Studies Committee Representative

Eligibility: Active member of FSSRT.
Qualifications: An interest in undergraduate issues as well as previous teaching/TAing experience at the University of Arizona. Confidence in speaking candidly to the undergraduate committee on behalf of the graduate student body; actively involved in and informed about the spectrum of undergraduate concerns, issues, and views as well as the historical context of issues; and ability to contribute objectively to the discussion of issues that are specifically relevant to the undergraduate program (e.g., program planning, advanced standing admission requirement, curriculum changes, outstanding senior awards).
Responsibilities: Attends undergraduate committee meetings as scheduled (typically on a twice-monthly basis 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month); responsible to act as a communicative liaison between the undergraduate committee and FSSRT; and reports relevant FSSRT issues to the undergraduate studies committee and vice versa (i.e., provides thorough reports at FSSRT meetings etc.). Seeks another cabinet member to temporarily perform these responsibilities when unable to do so.
