The UA College of Agriculture and Life Sciences conducts programs with long traditions in assuring that the region—and indeed the world—has food and fiber of both quantity and quality. Perhaps lesser known are the College's research and development efforts in designing and evaluating bioregenerative systems that can support life in extreme environments on earth, the moon and Mars.
One of these systems is the South Pole growth chamber, designed and built by a CALS' Controlled Environment Agriculture-led team to withstand the long and extreme winter night at the US National Science Foundation Amundsen-Scott Station located in the heart of Antarctica.

The CEAC focuses on hydroponic crop production, nutrient delivery, environmental control, and automation and management systems for its Mars and lunar prototype greenhouses, the South Pole Food Growth Chamber, and other programs. The lunar greenhouse and its recent Outreach & Teach module support NASA investigations for off-planet habitats while securing systems to protect food growing ability anywhere on Earth, especially our cities.
During the virtual-satellite-communications visit to the South Pole, you will see first-hand the bio-regenerative system currently supported by Lockheed-Martin, and will have the opportunity to hear students pose questions to Joselyn Fenstermacher, Lockheed Martin Asc operator for the growth chamber. She will discuss how the challenges of producing fresh vegetables within the extreme climate and remote location of the South Pole are met.
Students from CEAC courses in greenhouse engineering and hydroponic crop production will interact with Fenstermacher from their classroom in Tucson. Questions from online viewers will be taken for Fenstermacher in advance; email firstname.lastname@example.org
