28 January 2020 | KAUFMAN'S internship featured by ENVS

The Department of Environmental Science (ENVS) at UArizona recently featured Ella Kaufman's internship with the Archer Lab as a blog feature on the department homepage. Ella's internship centered around the project Brush management and ecosystem services." In concert with her technician duties, Ella received internship credit as part of her degree requirements. In addition, he gave a 10 minute public presentation to students, faculty, staff of ENVS on Mon Nov 18, 2019, and this presention detailed her responsibilities and what she learned over the course of her involvement during the Fall 2019 semester.

Ella is a sophomore pursuing a degree in Environmental Science with an emphasis in the Biosphere. Ella hails from Michigan and has been working with the Archer Lab since September 2019.

13 September 2019 | Seven student join A|L for AY 2019-2020

Dr. Adam T. Naito has hired seven new undergraduate students as technicians for the fifth and final year of the USDA-NIFA funded project "Brush management and ecosystem services: a quantification of trade-offs on Western Rangelands". These students include (from left to right in the photo): Caitlyn Aymami (Natural Resources); Tzirel H. Leiser (Natural Resources); Hannah M. Felkins-Talkington (Biology); Ella L. Kaufman (Environmental Science); Analise N. Nicholson (Biology); Grace A. Nykol (Natural Resources); and Erna I. von Estorff (Biology, not pictured). This project has afforded employment, experience, and mentorship opportunities to a total of 41 students to-date.

15 August 2019 | BURLESON receives ACIF Coughlin Scholarship

Cameron S. Burleson is the recipient of the 2019 Coughlin Scholarship, awarded by the Arizona Cattle Industry Foundation (ACIF). Since 1993, ACIF has provided scholarship funds to support college students purusing careers related directly or indirectly to the cattle industry. ACIF is part of the Arizona Cattle Growers' Association, a non-profit trade association formed in 1903 and represents Arizona ranchers and beef producers in legislative and regulatory affairs. This is the third consecutive year Cameron has received a ACIF scholarship, and these scholarships are providing her financial support as she pursues her degree in Natural Resources with an emphasis in the Ecology, Management, and Restoration of Rangelands.

Cameron is a student crew leader on the project, a technician in Dr. George Ruyle's lab, and a biological research technician with the Agricultural Research Service of the US Department of Agriculture

23 April 2019 | RUNNION named SNRE Outstanding Senior

Emily N. Runnion was named as the School of Natural Resources and the Environment's Outstanding Senior for Spring 2019. She was initially nominated by her supervisor, Dr. Adam T. Naito, as well as Dr. Steven Archer for the "breadth of her academic, professional, and volunteer activities, her proven record of leadership, and her commendable ethical qualities. Despite the academic and personal challenges that many others face in college, Emily has proven capable of balancing multiple extracurricular activities and her academic responsibilities. [Emily] is confident in pursuing a career as a researcher, improving our understanding of anthropogenic impacts on [ecosystem services] in the context of avian, mammalian, and herpetofaunal communities. It has been rewarding to work with Emily and watch her grow academically, professionally, and personally."

Emily is completing her degree in Natural Resources with an emphasis in Wildlife Management and Conservation. Her many accomplishments and job positions while an undergraduate include: serving as an outreach presenter with the Tucson Environmental Education Exchange, pursuing an internship as part of University of Florida's International Research Experiences for Students program in Eswatini, working as an urban herpetological fellow with Dr. Matthew Goode, and receiving the SNRE Student Leadership Award in Spring 2018. For the past three years, Emily has worked as a student crew leader and undergraduate technician in the Archer Lab as part of the the project "Brush management and ecosystem services: a quantification of trade-offs on Western Rangelands."

Emily joins three other undergraduate students employed by Dr. Naito and the lab in the last three years who have also been named Outstanding Seniors in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS), including Rayanna Benally (SNRE), Elena Dosamantes (SNRE Honorable Mention), and Courtney Pijanowski (ENVS).

23 April 2019 | FRIESS receives SNRE Student Leadership Award

Victoria R. Friess received the School of Natural Resources and the Environment's Student Leadership Award for Spring 2019. She was nominated by her supervisor, Dr. Adam T. Naito for her "1) status as a first-generation college student and the value she places on education and leadership, 2) motivation and success in seeking opportunities involving teaching, research, and community outreach at the University, State, and Federal levels, while an undergraduate, and 3) passion for improving our environment...Victoria exemplifies the best of a new generation of aspiring scientists and educators. She has independently overcome her adversities with integrity and grace, and she has emerged more mature, qualified, and prepared than her peers who have never had to experience such adversity. She is an inspiration to me. I always look forward to working with and talking to her, because I always learn something new from her and about her. "

Victoria was a Special Uses Assistant with the U.S. Forest Service on the Coronado National Forest, and she was a previous Bio/Diversity Project and Arizona Game and Fish Department intern.

Victoria joins Emily Runnion as one of two students employed by Dr. Naito and the lab in the last two years who have received the SNRE Student Leadership Award.

Cameron S. Burleson received the School of Natural Resources and the Environment's Outstanding Student Assistant Award for Spring 2019. She was nominated by her supervisor, Dr. Adam T. Naito who stated that Cameron's "intellect, maturity, independence, adaptability, and promise as a scientist to be indispensable...and I consistently rely on and value her perspectives and judgement. She will emerge from her degree program with a unique skillset informed by numerous and diverse national and international perspectives on rangeland management...and will be well-equipped to address the many challenges facing professionals in the field of natural resources ecology and management. Her collective experiences will allow her to be a role model for others and to offer critical solutions to our pressing environmental problems."

Cameron is pursuing her degree in Natural Resources with an emphasis in the Ecology, Management, and Restoration of Rangelands. She is an undergraduate technician on the project "Brush management and ecosystem services: a quantification of trade-offs on Western Rangelands," and will serve as a student crew leader in Fall 2019. Cameron also works as a technician in Dr. George Ruyle's lab, and as a biological research technician with the Agricultural Research Service of the US Department of Agriculture. In addition, Cameron is participating in a study abroad program this summer entitled, Sustaining Local Food, Biodiversity, and Livestock Grazing in the Alps."

Emily N. Runnion has been selected as a crew leader for Western EcoSystems Technology, Inc., for Summer 2019 following her graduation. She will be heading up a team to conduct acoustic bat surveys.

Emily is currently a senior in the School of Natural Resources and the Environment, a student crew leader on the project "Brush management and ecosystem services: a quantification of trade-offs on Western Rangelands", and a previous SNRE Student Leadership Award Recipient.

11 Mar 2019 | FRIESS to rejoin AZGFD as summer intern

Victoria R. Friess will be rejoining the Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD) this summer as an intern. She will be working with wildlife biologist Holly Hicks on a research project involving management of sylvatic plague in prairie dog colonies in the Kaibab National Forest of Arizona.

Victoria is completing her senior year in the School of Natural Resources and the Environment. She serves as a student crew leader on the project "Brush management and ecosystem services: a quantification of trade-offs on Western Rangelands.", and she was a previous Bio/Diversity Project and Arizona Game and Fish Department intern.

04 Feb 2019 | BURLESON receives Habgood Scholarship in Rangeland Management

Cameron S. Burleson received the Habgood Scholarship in Rangeland Management for her accomplishments in the Ecology, Management, and Restoration of Rangelands Program (EMRR) at the University of Arizona. The Habgood Scholarship, which provides a $2,000 monetary award, was established in 2016 to support an undergraduate student with promise in a career in rangeland management.

Cameron is currently a sophomore in the School of Natural Resources and the Environment, a member of Tierra Seca, and a technician on the project "Brush management and ecosystem services: a quantification of trade-offs on Western Rangelands."
